Y.O.U. Summer Jobs Minor Work Permits

Will I need a work permit?

  • If you are 14 or 15 years old and you are offered a position in the Summer Jobs Program, you will need a Work Permit.

  • If you will turn 16 before your first scheduled day of work, you do not need a Work Permit.

How do I get a Work Permit to work with Y.O.U.?

  • You must turn in a completed Application for Minor Work Permit to your school district and, at their discretion, they will issue an Age and Schooling Certificate.

  • The Application for Minor Work Permit has three sections that must be completed and turned into your school district.

    • Student/Applicant Information

      • This is completed by you and your parent/guardian.

      • A parent/guardian must sign this section.

    • Pledge of Employer Signature

      • This is provided after the Intake appointment and includes all of Y.O.U.’s information as the employer.

      • Your school district will not issue a Work Permit without the employer information and Y.O.U. will not provide the employer information until eligibility for funding has been determined.

    • Physician’s Certificate for Minor Work Permit

      • This is completed by a physician at your expense.

      • We advise you to schedule your exam now so that you can get it done quickly if you are offered summer job later.

      • If you have had a physical (to play school sports) in the past year, you may use a copy of that physical for obtaining a work permit. Please visit your school’s athletic department to obtain a copy of the physical.

      • If you would like to complete this step before your SYEP Intake Appointment, here is the Physician’s Certificate for Minor Work Permit you can have completed.

  • The HOW TO GET A WORK PERMIT instruction manual will be given to your PARENT/GUARDIAN upon approval for the Summer Job Program. This happens during the Intake/eligiblity determination process.

    • Y.O.U. will not sign off as the Employer on any Work Permit Application until after a Parent/Guardian has completed the Intake/eigiblity determination process with Y.O.U.

    • This instruction manual will contain a completed Employer section

  • Be advised that the Work Permit process can be lengthy and requires getting a physical exam at your family’s expense and having a physician sign off on their part of the application.

Who issues Work Permits?

  • Work Permits are issued by the school district you are enrolled in. Employers, like Y.O.U., cannot issue Work Permits. Every school district will have a different process for how they issue Work Permits so your school is your best resource.

Can I use the Work Permit my school gave me last summer with Y.O.U.?

  • No. You did not have continuous employment with Y.O.U. the entire year so the Work Permit is not valid. Each summer is considered new employment.

Can I use the Work Permit I obtained from my last job?

  • No. Work Permits are specific to employers so you must obtain a new Work Permit for every new job you have. A new work permit must be issued each time the minor changes employment.

What if my school will not issue me a Work Permit?

  • Sometimes issues with attendance or behavior can impact the schools willingness to issue a Work Permit. If your school district will not issue a Work Permit, Y.O.U. is not able to hire you.

I go to a Charter School and they do not issue Work Permits. What do I do?

  • You must work with your school to obtain a Work Permit. Your school may not be aware of the process they must go through to be able to issue Work Permits.

  • For Charter Schools:

  • Ultimately if your school does not provide a Work Permit Y.O.U. is not able to hire you. There is unfortunately nothing Y.O.U. can do.
